·         What: Experience what it’s like to work at Two Sigma from the perspective of our female engineers and modelers through a full-day event at our SoHo, New York City headquarters. The event will kick off with breakfast, followed by an introductory presentation and a panel discussion with Q&A session. You’ll also have the opportunity to network with a mix of Two Sigma employees from a variety of teams over lunch, and connect with recruiters who can answer any questions you have about working at Two Sigma. Fritz and GO! Scholarships for Study Abroad Now Open

The Fall 2015 application is now open for the Fritz and GO! scholarships for study abroad. UW CSE to host Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings vs. QANTA in trivia showdown

Ken JenningsIt’s man vs. machine when Ken Jennings, a former UW student and the most successful Jeopardy!player of all time, returns to campus to take on QANTA, a cutting-edge computer question-answering system, in a quiz bowl showdown. UW CSE is hosting the event at Kane Hall on the University of Washington’s Seattle campus on Friday, October 2.
This is not the first time Jennings has gone head-to-CPU with a computer: he came in second onJeopardy! – which he previously won 74 times in a row – to I.B.M.’s Watson in 2011. But unlike Watson, which sees the entire trivia question at once, the QANTA system decides when it has enough information to answer a question, meaning it can take part in a tossup competition. Before the game gets underway, Professor Jordan Boyd-Graber of the University of Colorado at Boulder will share details on the machine learning research that led to QANTA and how students can get involved in the project.
The event starts at 4:00 pm and is open to the public. High school and university students are encouraged to attend. Please note: advance RSVP is required to guarantee seating, then it will be first come first served. More details on the event can be found here.

If you're a female undergraduate or graduate student and all too familiar with being in the minority, here is an opportunity to expand your network, develop professionally, find support, and help change this for the next generation! I'd like to introduce a great outreach opportunity through the Society of Women Engineers. 
 
Time to Invent is an outreach program run by graduate students and focused on kindling a love of science and engineering in young girls . Once a month, our mentors visit a local elementary school and lead 4th and 5th grade girls through hands-on activities to encourage an interest in innovation and science/engineering. While activities are typically led by the graduate mentors, both undergraduate and graduate mentors are encouraged to participate in the activities! Our system will measure forces at the prosthetic foot, and deliver task-relevant feedback to the user. We will use noninvasive tactile / vibrotactile feedback for people having Targeted Reinnervation surgery. For people experiencing sensory transfer as a result of this surgery, touches on the skin of residual limb feel as if they originate from the amputated limb. We will use virtual reality to help understand this phenomenon.

We are developing a sensory feedback system for lower extremity amputees to use during stair locomotion. A key element of the project is a stair system that adapts to the speed of the user. This allows a short stairway to mimic a long flight of stairs. The stair system will enable research into how prosthetic limb users ambulate on stairs, while staying within a state-of-the-art motion analysis laboratory.

Undergrad Research Opportunity for EE Juniors/Seniors

We are looking for 1-2 motivated undergraduate senior students to participate in an underwater communications project. You will work with researchers (graduate student and professor from FUNLAB, see www.ee.washington.edu/research/funlab) in an NSF funded project and earn 499 credit, and based on performance, may be considered for a part-time research appointment for one qtr.

Qualifications: Experienced in C/C++ programming in Linux, hardware interfacing & debugging, basic understanding of the communication protocol stack and networking.

Expectations: Program and debug, operate acoustic modems, conduct field experiments teams, data collection and assistance with analysis. 1-2 days of availability per week during the quarter required.

GPSS hosts the annual Husky Sunrise on Sep. 28, 9-11 am

Husky Sunrise is the 2nd annual welcome event for graduate and professional students at the University of Washington, hosted by the Provost, the Graduate School and the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS). Take advantage of this unique opportunity to mingle with UW administrators, faculty, and graduate/professional students from across all academic disciplines. 

*When? *The program begins on September 28th at 9 am (Breakfast starts at 8:30).

CSE490D is a survey course introducing Accessible Technology

It is estimated that between 750 million and one billion people globally have vision, speech, hearing, mobility or cognitive limitations. We will consider how impairment and aging may affect a person's use of interactive devices, common assistive technologies and information technology. This course will discuss the growing role of technology in society and how design and engineering determine usability and access to technology. We will discuss both barriers and solutions to access through an evaluation of a gamut of technologies that aim to increase function, productivity and independence for users with various disabilities. We will also consider the financial, cultural, knowledge and physical barriers that prevent many people from having access to computing, and therefore to the information and services that are accessed through computing.  Students enrolling in the winter capstone will be given priority placement in CSE490D in fall.

This course is structured in a two credit seminar in the fall, followed by a 5 credit intensive capstone project course in the winter.
Juniors and Seniors in Electrical Engineering, Human Centered Design Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bio Engineering and graduate students in Rehabilitation Medicine are all strongly encouraged to register.

Student Research Opportunities with the Autonomous Flight Systems Laboratory

The Autonomous Flight Systems Laboratory (AFSL) in the William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics is holding an information meeting to inform students about upcoming research opportunities in the area of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for the 2015 – 2016 academic year.  For more information, please see that attached flyer.

The three major programs that will be covered at this meeting are:

1.  Design/Build/Fly
-Students design, fabricate, and demonstrate flight capabilities of an unmanned, radio controlled aircraft.
-Students compete in an international fly-off in the spring.

2.  Control and Usability of UAS
-Students will investigate control systems for UAS
-Students will build autonomous fixed wing, multi-rotor, and ground vehicles.

3.  Wind Tunnel Testing of Complex Ice Shapes
-This project involves creating wind tunnel models of complex ice shapes.
-Students will use CAD and 3D printing to generate these models.
