Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. For a complete list of countries, click here.

Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. For a complete list of languages, click here.

Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined.  NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. To view the Program Basics for the Boren Scholarship, click here.

Undergraduate applicants must apply through UW to be considered for the Boren Undergraduate Scholarship Program. UW Seattle's deadline for undergraduate applicants is January 8, 2015 for study abroad programs during the 2015-16 academic year. UW Data Science Seminar - Jure Leskovec - October 8th, 3:30pm - MGH 389

UW Data Science Seminar <http://data.uw.edu/seminar/>
Analysis, Visualization & Discovery
Wednesday October 8, 3:30pm — 389 Mary Gates Hall
Can Cascades be Predicted?*Jure Leskovec*
Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Stanford University

Social networks play a central role in spreading of information, ideas, behaviors, and products. As such "contagions" diffuse from a person to person they may go "viral," and large cascades can form. However, a growing body of research has argued that virality and cascades may be inherently unpredictable. Thus, one of the central questions is whether information cascades can be predicted and possibly even engineered. In this talk, I will discuss a framework for predicting cascades and making them go viral. We study large sample of cascades on Facebook and find strong performance in predicting whether a cascade will continue to grow in the future. The models we develop help us understand how to create viral social media content: by using the right title, for the right community, at the right time.

I help coordinate the graduate admissions process for the department and am entering my sixth year in this role. I am offering  a workshop titled, “Guidelines for Creating a Successful Graduate School Application.” This workshop will use the Bioengineering PhD/MS application as an example, but general application advice will also be provided. When: Wednesday, October 8, 2014, from 1:30 – 4:00pm
Where: Ethnic Culture Center
Who: Anyone applying to graduate school
** Light snacks/refreshments will be served***

My workshop will focus on the following concepts: application timeline, the personal statement, references, transcripts, background, what the committee is looking for, and so on.
I emphasize that this is a workshop.  There will be a brief PowerPoint presentation, but the focus of this event will be a HANDS-ON experience: reviewing applications using REAL examples, discussing your feedback about the applications with your peers, and hearing committee feedback so that you can gauge your level of understanding of an admissions committee’s expectations. NSBE Welcomes YOU!

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! As you are getting accustomed to school again, I ask you to consider the National Society of Black Engineers (UW Chapter) as a staple in your weekly schedule.

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is a national organization; founded in 1975 to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.

Personally, this organization is the best investment I have made at the UW. NSBE has provided me with opportunities (both in Seattle and in different states across the US) to meet employers, receive internships & full-time job offers, to be a part of a community of like minded individuals with an interest in STEM, and has given me mentors internally and at Boeing (Boeing Mentorship Program).

As I go into my last year at the UW, I invite you to join me at our NSBE meetings:

Date: Tuesdays (meets every Tuesday starting on September 30, 2014)
Time: 5:30pm - 6:30pm
Location: Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center - Black Room (3rd floor, NW corner)

We are writing to introduce you and your students to the UC Berkeley Master of Financial Engineering Program.  We hope that you can kindly pass on occasional emails to your students/group lists to let them know about our upcoming events.  Any student with a very strong quantitative background, strong programming skills, and a potential passion for finance can be a good candidate; generally, our students have held Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. degrees in engineering, mathematics, computer science, statistics, physics, economics, or related fields prior to beginning the MFE at Berkeley.
We are happy to answer any questions you or your students may have.  If you are not interested in receiving these emails, you may opt out using the link below.

Kind regards,
The Berkeley MFE Admissions Team

Mentoring with the STEM OUT Program

Do you want to have an impact on the
future of STEM Education?

The STEM OUT program seeks to broaden participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math for youth from backgrounds historically under-represented in the STEM fields. We connect and support UW students and STEM professionals as mentors to high school students at TAF Academy (a public, STEM-focused school) in the South Seattle area.

Join the STEM OUT program to:
Inspire students for their futures in STEM scholarship & careers
Cultivate your expertise as a mentor and educator
Build mentoring relationships with youth in the Seattle area
Promote equity and learn about social justice in STEM fields
Learn about the Next Generation Science Standards and K-12 curriculum development

STEM OUT will start in mid-October, with every-other-week mentoring sessions
(in-person or via Skype). Flexible scheduling and transportation provided.

Info session for the Game Development Club

The first meeting of the Game Development Club is this Wednesday and we'd love to have new members join us!

This quarter, we'll be learning how to use the Unity game engine by creating an Asteroids like game. At each meeting we'll be covering how to complete a specific aspect of the game, such as implementing player movement or making a user interface.

Everyone is welcome! No programming experience is needed to get the general gist of how things work. We will be doing plenty of programming in C# though (which is very similar to Java), so if you do know programming this would be a great place to apply it.

We meet every Wednesday from 4:30 to 5:20 PM at CSE 203. Our very first meeting will be this Wednesday (Oct. 1) in which we'll be going over the game project in more depth as well as starting to learn the basics of Unity!

If you can't make it or you want to check out what we're doing in future meetings, come check out our website at gamedev.cs.washington.edu

Engineering Women in Science & Engineering (WiSE) Fall Lecture

The University of Washington College of Engineering and Qualcomm present:

2014 Women in Science and Engineering Fall Lecture

One woman's journey in engineering and science: A report from the front lines

Featuring Dr. Blythe Towal
Engineer and scientist
Noted Forbes Science & Healthcare 30 Under 30
2011 L'Oréal USA For Women in Science Fellow

Wednesday, October 15, 2014
5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Husky Union Building (HUB), room 340
Dr. Towal will share her journey to become a nationally recognized engineer and scientist. Over the last ten years, she has worked in government labs, universities, research institutes, and industry. In her own words:

My time spent working across biology, electrical engineering, and computer science has allowed me to work with a multitude of scientist and engineering teams diverse in size, discipline, ethnicity, and creativity. I've built robots, studied how rats use whiskers to sense their environment, modeled the human visual system, and developed industry-leading applications of biologically inspired computation.
At every step of the way, I've gotten to work with outstanding mentors and colleagues. In this talk I will share my experiences, as well as concrete data and first-hand observations of how working within the STEM environment is evolving and improving for women.
